A Legacy Rooted in Community
Mahoning Country Club was founded in 1923 by a distinguished group of Youngstown business leaders who envisioned a private retreat where families could gather, compete, and celebrate together. Among the founding members were Edward Mahoney, a prominent steel industry executive whose vision for the club shaped its identity; Charles Sterling, an attorney and civic leader who donated a portion of the original land; and Helen Brookfield-Ward, one of the few women involved in the club's charter and an avid golfer who insisted the facility be welcoming to families from day one.
The club originally opened with a modest nine-hole golf course designed by regional architect Frederick Hartshorn, a croquet lawn, and a Colonial Revival clubhouse that could seat sixty guests for dinner. Even in those early years, Mahoning quickly became a gathering place for the community's most engaged civic and business leaders, hosting charity galas and holiday celebrations that drew attention across the Mahoning Valley.
By 1947, growing membership demand led the board to commission a full expansion to eighteen holes. Renowned course architect Albert Langford was brought in to redesign the layout, incorporating the natural rolling terrain and mature oak groves that define the playing experience to this day. The back nine, with its signature par-three twelfth hole over a spring-fed pond, remains one of the most photographed holes in northeastern Ohio.
A major clubhouse renovation in 1968 doubled the dining capacity and introduced the walnut-paneled members' lounge, complete with the stone fireplace that still serves as the heart of the club's social life. In 2005, the club added a state-of-the-art fitness center featuring cardiovascular and strength-training equipment, a yoga studio, and personal training services. Most recently, the grand ballroom underwent a comprehensive renovation in 2018, transforming it into one of the region's most sought-after venues for weddings, corporate events, and milestone celebrations, with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame panoramic views of the eighteenth fairway.

What Our Members Say
"When we relocated to Youngstown from Columbus three years ago, Mahoning Country Club became our anchor in the community. The new member orientation program introduced us to families who have become some of our closest friends. My husband plays in the Saturday morning foursome, I take tennis lessons on Tuesdays, and our kids spend every summer afternoon at the pool. It truly feels like a second home."
"I have been a member at Mahoning for over thirty years, and what continues to impress me is how the club evolves while honoring its traditions. The recent clubhouse renovation preserved the original oak paneling and stone fireplace in the main lounge while adding modern amenities throughout. The Friday night fish fry remains as good as it was in the eighties, but now you can also enjoy sushi-grade tuna from Chef Russo's new menu."
"We chose Mahoning for our rehearsal dinner, and we were so impressed that we moved our entire wedding reception here as well. The Grand Ballroom with its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the eighteenth fairway was breathtaking at sunset. David and his events team coordinated flawlessly with our florist, photographer, and band. Even our out-of-town guests who belong to country clubs in other states said it was one of the most beautiful venues they had ever seen."
